I have spent my life playing sports. A product of the American Midwest, my youth is best remembered as an athletic menagerie of freshwater lakes, kayaks, canoes, cliffs, campsites, forests and fields of grass as green as any gracing the Irish countryside.
I grew up playing organized football – the proper ‘football’, not the American bastardization of the beautiful game – basketball, tennis, golf and whatever else I could do. I have splished and splashed in a good percentage of Minnesota’s 10,000 lakes, traversed the tributaries of the mighty Mississippi and camped, climbed and competed in her pine forests for most of my life.

Flatter terrain and cooler weather made for a faster course on the third stage of the Coastal Challenge Tuesday morning, allowing for Judith Abbot (Canada) to lengthen her lead in the women’s division.
With a strong finish on day one and taking first place on day two, Abbot is poised for her first adventure race win.
American Ty Stevens overtakes third place, increases lead on day two of The Coastal Challenge
Despite heavy overnight rains making for tough muddied trails and more than 12,000 feet of elevation change, Ty Stevens (USA) took a hefty lead over fourth place runner Victor Zuniga (CRC).
Two-time champion Javier Montero of Costa Rica is in position to take an unprecedented third win after stage one of The Coastal Challenge, a six-day adventure race in Costa Rica.

At 1300hrs on the 18! th January 2010, after 60 days and 1700km, professional explorer, adventurer and speaker Mark Kalch completed a solo trek across the Islamic Republic of Iran from its northern border on the Caspian Sea to its southerly border in the Persian Gulf. Another crucial piece of technical gear to tote with you? You might be skeptical at first, but only long enough until you pop open your GoLite Chrome Dome and find shelter from the rain or shine.
Whether bike touring, trekking, adventure racing, or event just running errands around the city, you will wonder how you ever got along without a technical umbrella. The biggest surprise I found was

Having traveled all over the world and being the consummate observer of human behavior, I have developed a list of travel tips that can make your next trip less stressful and more enjoyable with a little planning before your departure.
• Luggage: I can’t begin to recount the times that I have watched people at the baggage carousel perusing each black rolling bag that comes of the belt only to discover it is not their luggage.
Facing the Wind: Three Argentine kayakers are making their final push to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. Upon arrival they will have cycled (while towing their sea kayaks behind) 650 kilometers from the …

When it comes to mountain biking in British Columbia, Canada most people hear about the trails around the North Shore in North Vancouver and the trails and bike park in Whistler. However, taking a 1.5 hour ferry ride over to Vancouver Island is well worth the trip with most of the trails being within 1.5 hours of Nanaimo.
What is it that makes adventure racing, at its core, completely different from other sports such as triathlon, or ultrarunning, or rogaining, or 24 hour mountain biking? There are a lot of sports out there that share aspects of AR – in terms of being off-road and adventurous, and involving multiple disciplines, and in requiring strategy and navigation skills.
I’d argue that the one thing that really makes AR unique is the team aspect of it. Not a relay team, not a cumulative-times kind of team, but a team that must stick together no matter what, and problem-solve in order to keep all members united and moving forward as quickly and as efficiently as possible.
I’ve found that the word “Baja” holds different meaning for everyone who hears you might be going. For some it mean’s fast off-road 4×4 racing through the desert. Others think of tequila and Cabo San Lucas. Still others simply think it’s just that deserted land strip past Tijuana. What most don’t know about the area is that lying between the mainland of Mexico and the Baja peninsula is one of the most biologically diverse bodies of water on our planet, the Sea of Cortez.

A few things, I have tried major manufacturers ” travel clothing”, most of which I am still trying to sell or give away. Who wants to look like a walking advertisement mistaken for an ATM? We already carry cameras that make us look like we work for National Geographic (or want to) , so wearing a nice yellow or green pair of pants just doesn’t fit the bill.
Planning for a trip is almost as good as actually going on one. The devil is in the details, as they say, but if you are a gear junkie like me, it’s actually quite fun to put together your arsenal for a pending adventure.
We are five souls, scattered across mountain towns in the US, coming together for a ski expedition into the unknowns of the Andes Mountains. Our team’s hope is to climb and ski some high peaks (upwards of 7200m), but you never really know. Weather, mountain conditions, health, and human interaction all have a say in the outcome, so flexibility is most important.
