Okay, so when I first saw the Animas Quadracycle…I was perplexed. Then, I watched everything that it was capable of doing. I ride the Great Allegheny Passage (Pittsburgh to DC) each year on my mountain bike. I am wondering how the Quadracycle would perform over the 300+ miles? I do know one thing…you would definitely have right of way and other bikers would be scrambling to get out the way of this four-wheel, electric and human powered beast.
There appears to be a new sport on the winter scene!!!! I first ran across this video on the Chaco Facebook page. Even though it was posted in late 2008, this is the first time I had seen it. Joel and Tate explain the importance of ’skootching’. Anyone that has ever been snowboarding knows what they are referring to when they mention the ’skootch’. My favorite might have to be the treadmill scene on the board.
A couple of days ago, I posted a mountain biking video to help pass the days while record snowfall across the states prevent most of us from hitting the trails except in spirit. This time, Kraig Becker over at The Adventure Blog had posted this video with some great paddling incentives to continue our longing to get outside. It is also the trailer for the upcoming kayak movie called Face Time (due out this spring).
Randy Ericksen, the guy that brought us all of the Primal Quest Web Episodes, emailed me today to send me a much more relevant bike video (as opposed to the one I posted last night) for the general population (including myself). Randy won the Best Emerging Director at the 2009 Black Hills Fat Tire Film Festival.
As I look out the window here in western PA, I can only dream of the months ahead that will be snow free where I can once again saddle up and take to the trails. The last few weeks in the mid-Atlantic states have dropped record amounts of snow on the area. In the span of 5 days, we have received over 30 inches. Not that I am complaining. I have dusted off the snowshoes and blazed new trails.
Okay…so this video is over 3 years old. But, it is still awesome! Check out what unicycle legend Kris Holm does on one-wheel that some of us would have a hard time doing with two.
A few months back…we posted an interview with Eric Larsen prior to his departure for his expedition to the South Pole as part of his Save The Poles Expedition. While at Outdoor Retailer Winter Market last month, I got to sit down with Eric and we have another interview with him about his trip and his gear and his outlook on the next phase of his expedition to the North Pole. Check out this great video from his recent expedition to the South Pole.
Skateboarding is not something that we normally follow but someone sent me this video of 11-year-old twins, Nic and Tristan Puehse. It is great to see today’s youth out pushing the limits as opposed to sitting in front a TV or computer. Remember these 2 kids….you will see more of them in the future.
Early next month, the Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race will get underway at ‘the end of the world’. I consider this race to be one of the hardest (if not the hardest) races in the world for adventure racing. There are 2 American teams participating this year including the Gear Junkie himself, Stephen Regenold. Check out this epic preview video as we all await the start of the race on February 9.

Jordan has already reached the summit of Denali (North America), Aconcagua (South America), Mt Elbrus (Europe), Kilimanjaro (Africa) and Mt. Kosciuszko (Australia). He has set records on several of these as well as the youngest to set foot on the summit.
So, what does that leave for the young mountaineer?
The short list includes Vinson Massif (Antarctica) and Everest (Asia).
The Rally Aicha des Gazelles is the only all women’s off-road rally raid in the world. Celebrating the twentieth year anniversary, this adventure race on wheels takes place across Southern Morocco and is made up of over 120 teams representing 30 countries. It is the Ironman of off-road racing, only allowing teams to navigate with outdated maps, compass, and ruler for over nine-days of grueling competition – no GPS, no phones, no computers, and no support teams.
AW will have daily updates during the competition from March 13th – March 27th, 2010.
It is only January and I can’t imagine that anyone would be tired of the snow sports yet. However, if you are looking for a break from the skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, etc…give the following a try. Randy Ericksen, who has brought us all of the great Primal Quest webisodes, spent the day snow kayaking in South Dakota.
