130 Mile Solo Paddle Board Crossing From Cuba to Key West

Next month, Cynthia Aguilar will attempt to complete a 130 mile solo paddle board crossing from Cuba to Key West. Her goal is raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and her non-profit organization, Keep Paddlin’, Inc. The 26-year-old is out to show people that one person can make a difference. She has undertaken other endurance events as a way to raise money and awareness for individuals and groups. She also hosts paddleboard races as a way to help others in need.

Walking For Veterans Suffering From PTSD

Veterans International Aid (VIA) is a UK based charity that helps veterans who have suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) by getting them involved in adventurous events that rebuilds confidence and self esteem.

We are currently doing a series of walks that will be done over the next 3 years called the Union Flag Walks that will cover approximately 9,000 miles and will form the Union Flag when completed. In May this year we started our first walk which was a 1200 mile walk from John O’ ‘Groats in North East Scotland to Land’s End in South West England. This formed the first part of the St. Andrews Flag on the Union Flag This walk wa completed in 27 days as a relay event.

NEMO Equipment, Inc., manufacturer of AirSupported™ and Extreme Conditions Tents™, sleeping pads and backcountry accessories, has donated over $30,000 in tents and sleeping pads to Haiti relief efforts. Teaming up with Mark Richey Woodworking, a local Newburyport, MA business, NEMO was able to deliver 50 brand new Nano OZ tents, footprints and Removable Insulated Floors, as well as a few previously loved tents from its employees. The tents joined an already scheduled shipment heading to Florida and on to Haiti.

Polar explorer Eric Larsen announced today that he has reached the South Pole, the first completion in his three-part “Save the Poles” expedition. Upon completion, he will be the first-ever to make it to the North Pole, South Pole and summit of Mt. Everest in a continuous 365-day period.

Eric Larsen begins his quest later this week to begin his Save the Poles Expedition. This will be a first-ever journey to the North Pole, South Pole and summit of Mt. For the very first time, researchers are studying of the summering ecology of polar bears of the southern Beaufort Sea who choose to migrate north to the sea ice of the polar basin when the winter ice pack melts, rather than return to the shores of Alaska. Early reports from the icebreaker expedition, which launched September 29th from Barrow, AK and returned November 1st, show warmer than expected weather and thinner than expected ice – conditions potentially detrimental to polar bears says the president of Polar Bears International, Robert Buchanan.

Renowned explorer, Eric Larsen, will start his Save the Poles Expedition in November 2009 to research his story on global warming. Larsen announced last week that he’s leaving for the South Pole early next month to begin the “Save the Poles” first-ever expedition to the North Pole, South Pole and summit of Mt. Everest in a continuous 365-day period. If he completes the expedition, Larsen will be the first person to accomplish this incredible feat. He hopes to spotlight the “front lines” of global warming to document the changes occurring in these last great frozen places. He will advocate strategies for reducing carbon emissions and collect relevant scientific data.

We just got out of the Grand Canyon late yesterday afternoon with 22 AMAZING and inspirational women who laughed, cried, pushed, pulled, towed, and cheered with one another for 44 hard miles over the last 2 days. The Rim to Rim to Rim trek was truly the most epic and moving experience of most of our lives–so many transformations, so much joy, so many memories of those friends that have passed and dreams for the future for our next Athenaship Recipients.

Chilean Adventurers To Attempt Unassisted Kayak/Climbing Expedition at the Antarctic Peninsula!

Two Chilean kayakers/climbers, Cristian Donoso and Mario Sepúlveda, will attempt a unassisted kayak voyage and climbing expedition at the Antarctic Peninsula.

Next month, Cristian and Mario will cross the Drake Passage on board the ship ‘Antarctic Dream’ to get to the Antarctic Peninsula from where they will start their expedition.

Australian City Ditches Disposable Plastic Water Bottles

An Australian city has voted to collectively eliminate its dependence on disposable water bottles and promote the use of reusable water bottles and filtered water stations throughout the town. Bundanoon is a small town located about 90 miles southwest of Sydney in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. The businesses and residents of Bundanoon voted overwhelmingly in July to take this stand against the bottles and for the environment.

The Mongolia 2010 Expedition (M2010X) is the brainchild of British Adventurer Ripley Davenport. Roz Has Landed!

On September 6, 2009 Roz Savage, British ocean rower and environmental campaigner, made landfall on Tarawa, a small atoll in the Republic of Kiribati, successfully completing stage 2 of her epic bid to become the first woman in history to row solo row across the Pacific Ocean. She launched this stage of her voyage on May 24, from Honolulu, Hawaii. She spent 104 days at sea, bringing the total number of days alone at sea for her Pacific crossing to 203 days. Savage uses her ocean rowing adventures to help inspire action on environmental issues.

Bike Powered Plane?

Ever feel like you are flying when on your bicycle? How about actually flying while pedaling your bicycle?
Dutch Teenager, Jesse van Kujik, has made it happen with his pedal powered plane made out of balsa wood, polyurethane, and rip-resistant foil. All without even building a model or flying in a plane before.

This impressive project began in 2006, when the teenager started researching the Gossamer Condor (the first pedal-powerd plane to fly a figure-8) and the Gossamer Albatross (the first pedal-powered flight over the English channel.
