We have touched on or follow extensively several bike expeditions that are currently taking place. We decided that we would compile all of them that we knew of within one post so that our readers could check out each with a brief description of the expedition and where the adventurer was currently. We know of at least the eight below. Let us know of any others and we will add them to the list.
Peter Gostelow: Peter left the UK on August 16, 2009 in route to Cape Town, South Africa. This is his second bike expedition (biked from Japan to England between 2005-2008). He is seeking to raise awareness and money for the Against Malaria Foundation. According to his site on November 4, he was was currently in Portugal.
Helen Lloyd: Helen left in July with her goal of biking from Cambridge, UK to Cape Town, South Africa. The purpose for her trip is to raise awareness and funds for the Welbodi Partnership. She is currently in Mauritania.
Mark Beaumont: Mark recently broke the world record for circumnavigating the world via bicycle (18, 296 miles in 194 days). He beat that record by 81 days. That record was recently broken by James Bowthorpe). Mark is currently Cycling The Americas from Alaska to Argentina. He will also climb the 2 highest peaks in the Americas, Mount McKinley and Aconcagua (on foot). He is currently in Panama.
Sean Maher: Sean left earlier this month to begin his ride from the UK to Cape Town, South Africa. A recent graduate and in his his quest to find a job, he decided to literally ride out the recession from his bike while seeking to raise money for charity along the way. Sean will be posting updates and reviewing gear for Adventure World along the way.
Tom Allen: Tom has been cycling throughout Europe, Africa and Asia since 2007. There is no apparent end destination in sight or defined timeline for his trip. He states that, “Travel is the education I never got at school, and doing it on a bicycle, tent and stove in tow, is the adventure of which I always dreamed.” He is currently spending the winter in Armenia.
Riding The Spine: Jacob, Goat and Sean set out in in 2006 to bike unpaved roads from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. Three years later, they are almost done with their journey as they make there way through Argentina. Along the way they have competed in an expedition length adventure race, climbed Cotapaxi, kayaked from Panama to Columbia and more. They have truly lived the bike expedition lifestyle. Jacob has been a contributing writer to Adventure World for the past year, sharing his experiences along the way from Panama heading south.
Cycling To The Ashes: Oliver “Oli” Broom, a 29-year-old Briton departed the UK in mid-October to cycle approximately 25,000Km solo from Lord’s Cricket Ground, London to Brisbane Cricket Ground (”The Gabba”), Australia and arrive in time to see England play Australia in the first Ashes Test Match (2010/11) in November 2010. He is currently in Germany.
Family on Bikes: John, Nancy and their 11-year-old twin boys (Daryl and Davy) left Alaska in 2008 to bike to Argentina. They left Alaska on a tandem and two singles. When they arrive in southern Argentina, Daryl and Davy will become the new Guinness World Record Holders as the youngest people to cycle the Pan-American Highway. They are currently in Ecuador.
