One of the most unlikely gear choices I´ve come across. No matter how much I thought I didn´t need one, after using one long enough to lose it, I was sad and wanted another. I even bought some random fabric and tried to sew one together, but it just wasn´t the same.
The inventor, a keen off-road trials motorcyclist from Spain, “realised there was a need for a multifunctional garment that could be worn on and around his head while out riding in any and all conditions.” He had worked in textiles for over 25 years and was able to find a “high performance microfibre that is breathable, moisture wicking and wind resistant.”
After entering a Buff® team into the Eco-Challenge adventure race in 1998, all the other racers were totally stoked on the multi-functional headwear the team had. Since then, it has become a standard accessory adventure racers and athletes.
Here are the reasons I like having my Buff® around.
-While cycling downhill (in Peru a descent can take two days riding) I can slip it over my ears/headphones, which both secures the earphones, and also keeps the howling wind out of my tunes.
-Climate Control: On a cold day, it can warm you up without overheating. You can cover your ears if you are cold, or if that gets too hot, uncover your ears.
-Wear it to sleep to stay warmer, doesn´t fall off like a normal beanie.
- On a hot day you can keep the sweat from dripping into your eyes and sunglasses.
-Nice when you are in ashy enivronment, smoggy car passes, dust storm, etc. You can slip it over your mouth to filter the air.
-When traveling by bus in South America, many routes take 16-24 hours, I can slip it over my eyes to block the light and get rest. Or if I´m camping under a full moon, or want to sleep in longer, blocking the light helps.
These are just a few things that came to mind when reviewing Buff® Headwear. On their website, they have videos showing you even more ways to use their products. Since the original they have designed specialty Buffs®: Wool, High UV Protection, Buffs® with visors, Headbands, Reflective, Polar, Cyclone, Typhoon, and more. Not to mention an infinite variety of colors and designs.
Perfect for traveling, for adventure races, and anything else you can do outdoors or indoors. I imagine, you will find plenty of practical uses for it.

I got some for cheap by auctioning on ebay from sinabro in korea. Designs are more limited, but the fabric and quality is the same (unlike the one I got from another korean seller, which wasn’t colorfast and didn’t stretch as much – total hoax). I can vouch for the ones I got. I know because I first saw the buff in Eddie Bauer, got the ones I now own, and went back to compare them with the ones at the store. This item is not worth the 20+ bucks at the store, but at about 3 bucks and free shipping, it really nice to have for the nose during cold weather
